Hendrik's Garden open to the public in September and November!

Hendrik Van Leeuwen's award winning garden will open over two weekends this spring, on September 25 and 26 through the Australian Open Garden Scheme and on November 13 and 14 through the Australian Garden DesignFest. The Australian Open Garden Scheme allows people to see 600 gardens across Australia and to talk to their owners and designers, while proceeds go to community grants for gardens and related projects. Last year, Hendrik's garden attracted over 1000 visitors so please come and see his garden for the first time or feel welcome to come again!

This year Van Leeuwen Green is a co-sponsor and partner of the Australian Garden DesignFest. Hendrik's garden will be open again in November for the festival. Come and see the garden and learn about design and sustainability. Details of the festival are in the Garden DesignFest newsletter in our media section below.

Victorian Landscape Awards

Van Leeuwen Green was top of the field in October’s Victorian Landscape Industry Awards in two categories – Plants in the Landscape and Sustainable Landscape. The awards from the Landscape Industry Association of Victoria (LIAV) recognised the careful design and implementation of Hendrik Van Leeuwen’s garden in Hughesdale.

We’re extremely proud to be acknowledged in this way and more determined than ever to continue creating beautiful, long-lived and sustainable gardens for Melbourne. For photos of the garden please click here.

The LIAV judges made the following comments in granting the awards:-

Plants in the Landscape

“The careful thought and planning that has gone into the design of this garden is evident in the very successful planting that packs a lot into a small space and makes the most of available resources. The planting is not only well designed in terms of plant growth requirements it also looks great. It incorporates interesting and unusual plant selections well outside the industry norm. Although there is very diverse planting it doesn’t appear cluttered; all the plants sit well together and the result is a highly functional small space that looks fantastic.”

Sustainable Landscape

“A great deal of thought has gone in to the design of this garden to achieve a highly sustainable outcome. Plants have been well chosen and carefully sited in hydro zones that are fed by harvested and grey water systems. Materials have been locally sourced or recycled and permeable paths and mulching used throughout to produce a well resolved, user friendly, aesthetically pleasing landscape.”
